New / Initial Students

  • If unable to enter the US for scheduled start date, student may begin up to four weeks later.
     
  • Employment - International students are allowed to work 20 hours per week while school is in session and 40 hours per week during vacation periods.
     
  • Medical Insurance - International students are required to have medical insurance.
     
  • **Because the selections of majors in SEVIS do not always seem to be a good match for what our majors are, we often state, "(Student's name) major is ___________.”
     
  • When SEVIS degree listing does not match our degree program: Film/Video and Photographic Arts, Other, so remarks section: Major: Animation
     
  • Student is required to participate in International Student Orientation from mm/dd/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy.
     
  • On initial I-20s in Remarks section: Purchase MSU Mandatory University Health Insurance, Complete the Three-Day Orientation, Pay $55 Orientation Fee, and take English and Math Placement Tests upon arrival. Summer expenses not included.
     
  • Transfer in remarks for new student: Transfer effective mm/dd/yyyy. Student is required to attend mandatory International Student Orientation on mm/dd/yyyy. Student is authorized to work on-campus. Enrollment is St. Thomas Health Insurance Program is required
     
  • For a change of level, complete previous degree in SEVIS with comments:
    • A. Bachelor's degree completed at end of Fall semester. Currently issued changed of level "initial" I-20 for Master's degree
    • B. Student returned for master's after completing bachelors and is fully enrolled.
       
  • Student returning to MSU for Master's level program after OPT: Currently issued changed of level "initial" I-20 for Master's degree.
     
  • Student waiting for a change of status – needs deferral in SEVIS: Student's Change of Status with Lincoln, Neb. still pending. Deferral to 3-1-06 so record does not auto cancel. Enter case # ___________________
     
  • Change of Status remarks on page 1 of I-20: Change of Status from ­­_____ to F-1 requested. Eligible to work on-campus after COS approved. Must enroll in UST health insurance.
     
  • Nothing standard, will use “remarks” section to describe funds from another source if space is needed

OPT related

  • Standard OPT in remarks section so it is added to third page of I-20: Student seeks post-completion OPT position in field of (major) – related to field of study
     
  • Shortened program (done at time of OPT recommendation):
    • A. Shortened program to match MSU completion date (for past students who have graduated).
    • B. Shorten program to anticipated completion date - expected graduation confirmed by academic adviser (for students applying for OPT in advance of graduation).
       
  • Student will work in one of her fields of study. Please issue for one year from date of adjudication.
     
  • Student plans to do post-completion OPT in the field of "x".
     
  • (Student's name) will be seeking a job which relates to his/her field of study at Bethel University.
     
  • Full-time Optional Practical Training is recommended in the field of Graphic Design for 12 months from the date of adjudication or May 13, whichever is later, to practice logo design, internet/web design, layout and desktop publishing, pre-press electronic editing, print checks, layout and for animation: practice drawing, color and inking, software programming, story-boarding, creating computer graphics/pictures for cell and 3D computer animations.
     
  • OPT Remarks on page 1 of I-20: Student will complete degree on mm/dd/yyyy. Program shortened to reflect this date. OPT recommended from mm/dd/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy. Student is in good F-1 standing. 
     
  • OPT Remarks on page 3 of I-20: Student is recommended for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) related to academic degree program. Full-time OPT requested for the dates listed above or for 12 months from the date of adjudication if OPT is not approved by the start date requested. Date of Graduation: mm/dd/yyyy.
     
  • OPT remarks added to the recommendation of page 3: Employment in the field of [student’s major] to begin no sooner than [requested OPT start date] and to end no later than [date 14 months after student’s expected completion]

Off-campus work permission

  • Student has been in status for at least one academic year, is in good standing and is enrolled full-time. The employment should not interfere with her pursuit of a full course load, and is necessary due to severe economic hardship due to circumstances beyond the student’s control.  On campus employment is insufficient to meet the student’s needs.
     
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is authorized for employment related to academic degree program for the dates above or until the student completes the program of study if sooner than the ending date above. The Designated School Official (DSO) recommends part-time employment (maximum of 20 hours per week) during academic semesters and full-time employment during university breaks and vacation periods (including Summer break, Thanksgiving break, Winter break, January term, and Spring break).
     
  • Student is recommended for one year of Economic Hardship based on unforeseen economic necessity from ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ mm/dd/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy or one year from the date of adjudication, whichever comes earlier. DSO recommends part-time employment during academic semesters and full-time employment during university breaks and vacations. Work is not valid without U.S. Immigration Department’s Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
     
  • CPT remarks added to the authorization on page 3: Employment in the field of [student’s major] required for [degree program or course number]

Students with a Data Fix

  • Student automatically completed. DSO made a mistake and did not extend graduation date. Student has NOT been out of status for more than 5 months. Student did not violate F-1 conditions. DSO requested data fix for returning the student to active status.

Two SEVIS #'s or a terminated record

  • Terminated remarks in SEVIS: H-1 status approved from mm/dd/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy.   I-797 granting H-1 status is scanned in student’s file. Today’s date. Staff initials.
     
  • Usually these students are returning after an extended absence that required termination: Student returning to resume study after extended absence.

Miscellaneous/Other

  • For ELS students: Student registered for non-credit ESL Summer Institute at MCAD. Student is a degree seeking and enrolled at
     
  • For International Students who Study Abroad: Per 8 CFR 214.2 (f) 4 i student approved for spring semester 2006 off- campus studies program in Japan at Osaka University of Arts. OUA starts class April 12 and ends July 30, 20006. Student currently enrolled for 15 credits at MCAD because of reciprocal agreement and credit transfer. PDSO will re-issue I-20 for return to U.S. to resume studies August 28, 2006 and graduate December 15.
     
  • SEVIS Registration: Student is in good F-1 standing. Must enroll in UST health insurance. Eligible to work on-campus.
     
  • To complete student record after graduation
    • A. Student provided plane ticket as evidence of intended departure from the U.S.
    • B. Student provided copy of airline ticket proving intent to depart the U.S.
       
  • Out of the USA less than 5 months: Student will be out of the USA for less than 5 months. Departure date: ­­­­mm/dd/yyyy. Expected return date: mm/dd/yyyy. Student is in good F-1 standing.
     
  • Student left U.S. – may resume study next term
    • A. Student left U.S. - registered to monitor five months out of U.S.
    • B. Student returned home. Registration reflects 5 month opportunity to return to study before SEVIS termination.
       
  • Travel home to renew visa: Student is in good F-1 standing and will apply to renew F-1 visa. Student is not subject to the SEVIS fee. Must enroll in UST health insurance. Eligible to work on-campus
     
  • Enrolled less-than full time if registered for Thesis/Alternate Plan Paper or internship
    • A. Student considered full-time due to full-time work on thesis/Alternate Plan Paper
    • B. MSU considers internship equivalent to full-time enrollment
       
  • I-20 Program Extension remarks for page 1 of I-20: This student’s academic program has been extended due to ________ reason. Student is in good F-1 standing. Eligible to work on-campus. Must enroll in UST insurance.
     
  • Visa Renewal remarks on page 1 of I-20: Student is in good F-1 standing and will apply to renew F-1 visa. Student is not subject to the SEVIS fee. Must enroll in UST health insurance. Eligible to work on-campus.
     
  • Add a Dependent remarks on page 1 of I-20: New I-20 issued to add Spouse / Child to I-20. Student is in good F-1 standing. Eligible to work on-campus. Must enroll in UST health insurance.
     
  • Reinstatement remarks on page 1 of I-20: Reinstatement to F-1 status requested. Eligible to work on-campus after reinstatement approved. Must enroll in UST health insurance.
     
  • Transfer out remarks on page 1 of I-20: Student is in good F-1 standing and is eligible for transfer to ___________ institution.
     
  • Remarks added to most “continued attendance” I-20s issued, but we started this more for the benefit of ISSS…with imaged files it’s helpful to see on each I-20 why it was issued. The following examples would appear in the remarks section on I-20 pg 1:
    • New I-20 to reflect change in funding information
    • Degree change: MS to PhD effective 9/06
    • Change of major: Econ to Chemistry
